Red Occultus Records presents a driving techno EP by Boom Merchant, which has raw sounds and undertones of funk.
This three-track release showcases Boom Merchant’s innovative production style, which takes intense techno grooves, and fuses them with elements from other genres. His tracks have swirling drums and thickset basslines combined with striking melody hooks and infectious vocals.
Living in Mexico, Boom Merchant is originally from Ireland, but has travelled the world as a headline DJ. His music has been released by record labels such as T78’s Autektone Dark, and he also frequents his own imprint Tribal Pulse. This is his second time working with Red Occultus Records, he has also featured on their sister imprints Occultus Records and Black Square Recordings.
The release’s title track, “Bad Trip” opens proceedings with fizzing hi-hats and a hammering kick drum, forming a framework for soulful vocal tones and tense pads. Next up, “Solo” has juddering drums and a throbbing bassline cut by dramatic stabs and vocal bursts. “Top Boy” closes the release with a pumping bassline and euphoric melody underpinned by robust percussion.
