Techno was created and developed far away from the mainstream. The underground sound got its deserved popularity in the past few years, but there is still a constant evolution happening beneath the surface, new sounds, sub-genres, and timeless artists who keep the spirit of the underground alive.
We believe underground producers and labels deserve special recognition, so we’re dedicating our Underground Corner series to these essential figures who shaped and continue to define techno’s identity.
This time, we turn our focus to one of the genre’s most respected visionaries – Marcel Dettmann.
Recognized as one of the most influential figures in contemporary techno, Dettmann has built a legacy rooted in authenticity and innovation. Deeply connected to Berlin’s electronic scene and its cultural landmarks Berghain and Hard Wax, he has spent over two decades redefining what it means to be an underground artist.
Raised in the former GDR, Dettmann’s early influences came from new wave, post-punk, and industrial music, sounds that shaped his distinctive artistic vision long before he discovered techno. His fascination with raw emotion, repetition, and tension naturally evolved into a lifelong dedication to electronic music. By the early 1990s, he had become a defining presence in Berlin’s growing techno community, securing his first residency at OstGut in 1999, and continuing as a Berghain resident since its opening in 2004.
As a DJ, producer, and label owner, Dettmann’s work is a study in contrasts: reduced yet emotional, rough yet refined, cold yet deeply human. Through his label MDR and releases on Ostgut Ton, he’s crafted a sound that bridges early industrial influences with the pulse of modern techno. His acclaimed mixes for fabric, !K7, Dekmantel, and others further showcase his versatility and unwavering commitment to pushing boundaries.
Marcel Dettmann isn’t just a Berghain icon, he’s an artist who embodies the essence of the underground: uncompromising, visionary, and eternally connected to the sound of Berlin.
